A bow can add the right touch of cuteness to any adorable cake or cupcake, whether it’s for a Birthday, Wedding, Baby shower or Christening. I typically make my bows out of fondant as I usually have extra pieces lying around.
You can also make it out of gumpaste, which some bakers find easier to stretch thinner and looks more realistic. I personally, love working with fondant since a lot of my cakes are covered in fondant, creating a nice fondant bow give the extra touch of elegance needed to any cake.
For this tutorial, I created a simple fondant bow. However, you can jazzy up your bow by adding patterns, dots and other shapes to it. You can even use different colors creating a marble effect.
The items you will need to make a fondant bow
- Fondant
- Ruler
- Pizza cutter
- Paper towel
- Vodka or Water
- Paint Brush (fine tip)
- Fondant Rolling pin
- Silicone Baking Mat
Roll out the fondant using the rolling pin to about 1/8 thickness, If you are noticing your fondant sticking to the mat, you can dust your mat with a combination of powder sugar and cornstarch. (I usually keep mines in a cheese cloth).
Using the pizza cutter and your ruler as your guide cut the fondant to absit 8.5-9 inches long about 4 inches tall. Remember this is just a guide feel free to make your fondant bow bigger or small.
Cut the height down by 1 to 1.5 inches as you will use this piece for center of the bow.
Place your ruler along the loner piece of the fondant and evenly cut it into 2 rectangular pieces
Take one side of the rectangle and brush it with vodka or water using your fine paint brush. For this demonstration I used vodka.
Ripe a piece of the paper towel and crumble it into a ball, place in the center of one of the fondant rectangles.
Fold the side of the fondant not brushed with vodka over the crumbled paper towel ball.
Pinch that sides together making an indentation before connecting it with the side that has been brushed.
Do the same method to the other rectangle fondant piece so that it is facing the other pinch rectangular fondant piece.
For the
Place the pinch pieces together, turn the small piece made for the knot on opposite and place under the two pinched fondant pieces and fold over so that the creases are showing on top.
Let the bow dry until it holds it shapes. You can add luster dust to make it your bow sparkle or even a tail to the front of the cake.
How to make a Tail
If you decide to make a tail for your bow, roll out more fondant. Cut the length of the tail to the size of the rectangular before it was cut into half. The width should be about the size of the middle piece for this demonstration it was about 1.5 inches, cute two equal sides.
Pleat the top ends and cut the bottom into a v shape or into a 45-degree angle.
Depending on the cake, I usually wait until the end to make the bow tails in order to position it correctly on the cake.
